Outings are about spending time with fellow SPR parishioners outside of church by exploring the amazing city around us. This year, we’re focusing on where good, hopeful work is happening in our neighborhood and on the South Side.

Cook County Jail

Saturday, Feb 4, 2:00p
So, cool story: one day Dan found himself talking with Cara Smith, chief policy officer for the Cook County Jail, and she offered to take church folks on tours of the Jail to raise awareness of what happens there and the reform efforts underway.

If you're interested in how criminal justice reform is taking shape in this oft neglected yet critical piece of the system, you won't want to miss this opportunity to tour the jail and to hear from Cara about the work she and Sheriff Dart's staff are doing.

Fee: None.
Ages: 18+
Accessibility: contact Dan to inquire about accessibility (dap@sp-r.org)

Stony Island Arts Bank

If you're interested in how the arts can bring new life to communities, this outing is for you. The Arts Bank is project of the Rebuild Foundation, created by celebrated artist Theaster Gates. Rebuild support artists and strengthen communities by providing free arts programming, creating new cultural amenities, and developing affordable housing, studio, and live-work space. The Arts Bank is a hybrid gallery, media archive, library and community center. Our tour will also go to the Housing Collaborative a few blocks from the Arts Bank, a rehabilitated public housing project that provides housing for artists and community members with the intent of fostering dialogue and collaboration between both groups.

Fee: $10 for tour fee
Ages: 12+ recommended
Accessibility: Both buildings are fully accessible. We will drive from the Arts Bank to the Housing Cooperative. Contact Dan for more information (dap@sp-r.org)
