Roger Ferlo, our priest associate, is also a curator/contributor to the Visual Commentary on Scripture, a remarkable website hosted by the department of Theology and the Arts at King’s College, London. SPR parishioners are invited to join Roger as he leads a six-session Lenten study course using resources provided by VCS, pairing key Scripture passages with beautiful and often startling visual images drawn from both Western and Eastern artistic traditions.
Each Sunday in Lent, participants will gather live on Zoom following SPR’s worship service. Together, we will explore a different set of three beautiful and thought-provoking works of art, along with brief commentaries written by VCS “curators,” all of which respond to a passage in Scripture that we will read and discuss together.
All you need to participate is a computer connected to the Internet, open eyes, an open mind, and the willingness to enter into both a holy stillness and a holy conversation. To paraphrase the Creed, in sharing with each other in this Lenten act of attention toward Things Seen, we can share with these artists a glimpse of Things Unseen.
You can join the course at any time, but do try to attend at least the first session, in order to orient yourself to way we will use the website. Instructions for Zoom access will be available in each week’s SPR e-News, where we also include links to additional materials for those who would like to go deeper. Feel free to email Roger if you have any questions. To get a sense of what’s in store and decide whether this is an experience you’d like to try, you can explore the VCS website—click on the useful Menu tab in the upper right-hand corner of the screen—as well as the two brief introductory videos, featuring program director Ben Quash.
